History of Inver Grove Heights
   In 1852, pioneers staked claims in an area known as Inver Grove. Attracted by the area's rolling green hills of the countryside and the close proximity to the Mississippi River. Those of Irish descent clustered their farms along what is now Rich Valley Boulevard. Settlers from Germany laid claim to the wooded farmland in the northwest portion of the community, clearing and cultivating fields from among the area lakes. Other settlers from France and England built homes along the Mississippi River.

   By 1858, the Township of Inver Grove Heights was incorporated. From 1858 until 1880, hundreds of settlers were attracted to the township that was named after an Irish fishing village, "Inver" and commemorating the homeland of the German settlers, "Grove."

   As commercial and industrial expansion took place in the late 1880's, people living in the one square mile adjacent to the railroad separated themselves from the surrounding area by incorporating as the Village of Inver Grove in 1909. The two entities existed side by side for more than 56 years. In 1965 the city of Inver Grove Heights was incorporated.

The town was named by John McGroarty, the name Inver Grove being given in recollection of a place in Ireland from which many of the settlers came.

   Located in Northern Dakota County, Inver Grove Heights is in close proximity to the Mississippi River Valley, which provides a beautiful natural setting and year-round recreational activities. Lakes, ponds and wetlands cover many areas of the city.

   There has been significant commercial development recently, with the arrival of several restaurants, a hotel, and a 16 screen movie theater all within an area adjacent to Highway 52 and Blaine Avenue.

   The Cahill Corridor, designated as Inver Grove Heights' Main Street annually celebrates the holiday season among it's business and merchants with decorative lighting and festivities. Holiday on Main Street is an annual event that includes such activities as Santa Brunch, Reindeer Sleigh Rides, Hay Rides, Arts and Crafts Show, and the Christmas Tree Lighting and Dedication.

   From the unique and diverse history that the community grew from, to the values and quality of life that make it home to thousands today, Inver Grove Heights is a particularly good choice when looking for employment, a business opportunity, or a place to spend some time with your family exploring.

Hwy 52 to 80th Street exit. West on 80th Street until you reach Barbara Ave., (approx.1 block), take a left on Barbara and straight ahead is City Hall. The address is 8150 Barbara Avenue.

The Veterans Memorial Community Center is right on the corner of Barbara Avenue and 80th Streets (8055 Barbara Avenue).
